Manager is not just a Leader or Boss; it’s much more…
Lot of
people seem lured to post, ‘who are you; boss or, leader’ or, ‘what you like to
be; boss or leader’ or even, ‘what is your manager, boss or leader’ and even
‘these are xx symptoms of boss and zz symptoms of leader’ kind of postings.
In
my opinion, these people are actually showing symptoms of unawareness towards
functionality of middle management. In simple term, ‘ they are unaware of
managerial role & responsibility’.
As a
manager, you can’t be singularly just a leader or just a boss.
On one side
as a manager your responsibilities are not just limited to, work as a link
between resources and sponsor/s, work as a link between resources and sponsors
and management, work as a link between resources, sponsor, management and
client. But, there can be even further expectations depending on sector, spectrum
and size of organization.
On the
other hand as manager, you are responsible to all your resources
(human/systems) for source of information, updation, requirement satisfaction, facilitation.
You can’t filter/bypass/deny, any/either of this.
To your
human resources;
*As a leader,
you have to give them the forecasts of task and path towards success and build
confidence in them to follow you.
*As a colleague,
you have to discuss processes and get feedback and opinion/s to check if you
lack something, and to make sure that, all are on the same page.
*As a brother,
you have to find if any of the team members needs you; to understand their
personal concerns.
*As a
guide, you have to find lapses and help them get trainings to fill up the gaps.
*As a
mentor, you have to sit on their side to listen to them; and read and work on
what may be unsaid.
Where you see leader v/s boss. Nothing personal…!
